I’m ready!

I am stressed about the first blog post, so I am going to just jump right in and not worry about it.

I’m making this blog so I can stay on track to be ethically, environmentally and financially sound. Since Jake and I are on a pretty tight budget, the most flexibility we have is with our food choices. Most of what I post about will be eating local on a budget. Thankfully it is summer and we have many farmer’s markets near by, along with the CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program at our local Hen House!

Here is the deal. We are beginning our first real budget in July. We have allocated about $44 a week for food, including breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinners. This is a pretty high amount for just the two of us, so I will work on bringing it down. It is more expensive to buy local, healthy and/1or organic foods. To cut down on food costs we are eating less meat and preparing more food from scratch.

Here is the plan. $25/week for the CSA program will give us lots of produce and a small amount of meat, cheese and milk. I will menu plan around what is available and then use the remaining $20 to supplement what we get from the CSA.

In the words of SpongeBob SquarePants: “I’m ready! I’m ready! I’m ready!”

Here is what I bought at the Shawnee Farmer’s Market today. Monday is Menu Plan Monday so stay tuned for that!

Red Potatoes, Green Beans, Red Bell Pepper and Blueberries!
